How to calculate GST

  1. 1

    Enter the amount.

  2. 2

Choose the GST rate, or type your own.

  3. 3

Pick “Add GST” for a price before tax, or “Remove GST” for a price that already includes it.

  4. 4

Read the base price, GST amount and the CGST/SGST split.

Add or remove GST in one step

Use Add GST when you know the price before tax, for example when quoting a client. Use Remove GST when the amount already includes tax, such as an MRP or a bill total, and you need the base price for your books.

A GST calculator for India that works as a GST amount calculator, a reverse GST calculator to remove GST (remove GST calculator), and a GST inclusive calculator.

  • Adding: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100; total = amount + GST.
  • Removing: base = amount ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); GST = amount − base.

So ₹1,000 plus 18% is ₹1,180, and ₹1,180 including 18% GST contains ₹180 of tax.

CGST, SGST and IGST

For a sale within one state, GST is split equally between the centre (CGST) and the state (SGST, or UTGST in union territories), so 18% becomes 9% + 9%. For a sale to another state, the whole tax is IGST. Choose the type of sale to see the right split for your invoice.

Current rates

Since the GST rate rationalisation on 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall under 5% or 18%. A 40% rate applies to luxury and sin goods, and special rates such as 3% (gold and silver) and 0.25% (rough diamonds) remain. Some essentials are exempt. Check your product’s HSN or SAC code to confirm its rate, or type any rate into the box.

Rounding

The calculator shows exact amounts to the paisa. Billing software often rounds CGST and SGST separately, or rounds the invoice total to the nearest rupee, so your printed bill may differ by a paisa or two. Frequently asked questions

How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?

Divide by (1 + rate/100). For ₹1,180 at 18%: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base price, so the GST is ₹180. Choose “Remove GST” and the calculator does this for you.

What are the GST rates now?

Since 22 September 2025 the main rates are 5% and 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods, and special rates such as 0.25% and 3% for precious stones and gold. Some items are exempt (0%).

What are CGST, SGST and IGST?

For a sale within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state). For a sale to another state, the whole amount is IGST.

Why is my bill off by a paisa?

Invoices often round each line or the CGST and SGST separately. The calculator shows exact values; round them as your billing software does.
