About the creative writing prompts

These prompts are for writing just for fun: what if gravity switched off every afternoon? What does a football think of the match? Write a haiku about a season, or invent a festival nobody has heard of. There are no wrong answers.

Unlike the school-style writing prompts, there’s no set genre, so these suit clubs, holidays, journals and early finishers.

Frequently asked questions

Are there poetry prompts?

Yes, ten of them, including acrostics, haiku, list poems and rhyming poems. Choose “Poetry” in the type menu.

How do I print prompt cards?

Choose “Cards” to get eight prompts per page with dashed cutting lines. Print on card for a reusable prompt jar.

Are the prompts free to use in class?

Yes. All prompts were written for Atifo and are free to print and share with students.

Can I add my own prompts?

Yes. Type them in the box, one per line, and they replace the ready-made ones. Nothing you type leaves your device.

What line spacing should I choose?

Wide lines with a dashed midline suit ages 5–7, medium suits 7–10, and narrow lines suit older students writing longer pieces.
