About the writing prompt generator

Over 50 original prompts cover the kinds of writing taught in school: narrative (tell a story), opinion (persuade the reader), informative (explain or teach), descriptive (paint a picture with words), and letters and journals. Tap for a random prompt, then print it at the top of a lined page.

Choose wide lines with a midline and a picture box for young writers, or narrow lines over two pages for longer pieces.

Ways to use prompts

What age are these prompts for?

Roughly ages 7 to 13. Younger children can draw first and write a sentence or two; older students can aim for several paragraphs.

Are the prompts free to use in class?

Yes. All prompts were written for Atifo and are free to print and share with students.

What line spacing should I choose?

Wide lines with a dashed midline suit ages 5–7, medium suits 7–10, and narrow lines suit older students writing longer pieces.

Can I add my own prompts?

How do I print prompt cards?
