Fuel cost for a trip or commute

Planning a drive, or wondering what your daily commute really costs? Enter the distance, your vehicle’s fuel economy and the price of petrol or diesel, and the calculator shows the litres needed, the cost, the cost per km and each person’s share if you’re carpooling.

A petrol cost calculator and diesel cost calculator: fuel expense for a trip or a month.

The formula

  • With km per litre: litres = distance ÷ mileage
  • With litres per 100 km: litres = distance × consumption ÷ 100
  • Cost = litres × price per litre

A 250 km trip each way (500 km in total) at 15 km/l uses 33.3 litres. At 95 a litre that’s about 3,167, or about 6.33 per km.

A month of commuting

Switch to daily commute and enter your daily distance there and back, and the working days. 30 km a day for 24 days at 15 km/l and 95 a litre costs about 4,560 a month, or about 54,720 a year: a useful number when comparing a car with public transport or an electric vehicle.

km/l and l/100 km

Indian cars and bikes are usually quoted in km per litre; Gulf and European cars often show litres per 100 km. 15 km/l is about 6.7 l/100 km, and 10 l/100 km is 10 km/l.

Real-world mileage

The claimed mileage comes from a lab test. In real driving, expect 10–20% less in city traffic, with the AC on, at high speeds or with a full load. Correct tyre pressure and smooth driving help.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your mileage to get litres, then multiply by the price. A 250 km round trip (500 km) at 15 km/l uses 33.3 litres, which costs about 3,167 at 95 a litre.

What is the difference between km/l and l/100 km?

km per litre is how far you go on a litre; litres per 100 km is how much you use for 100 km. 15 km/l equals about 6.7 l/100 km.

Why is my real mileage lower than claimed?

Claimed figures come from lab tests. Traffic, air conditioning, high speed, load and tyre pressure all lower it, often by 10–20%.

How do I split fuel cost for carpooling?

Enter the number of people in “Split between” and the calculator shows each person’s share.
