Cups, spoons, millilitres and grams, for any recipe.
Cups measure volume and grams measure weight, so the answer depends on the ingredient.

Cups and spoons are US measures unless marked metric. Ingredient weights are for spooned and levelled cups; a scooped or packed cup can weigh 10–20% more. For baking, weighing is the most accurate.

Cups, spoons and grams
Recipes from different countries measure differently: American ones in cups and ounces, British and Australian ones in grams and millilitres, Indian ones in cups, katoris and spoons. The converter changes any of these units into any other, and for cups ↔ grams it uses the weight of the ingredient, because a cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of sugar.

Quick reference
| Measure | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 US cup | 236.6 ml = 16 tablespoons |
| 1 metric cup | 250 ml |
| 1 tablespoon | 3 teaspoons ≈ 14.8 ml (15 ml metric) |
| 1 teaspoon | ≈ 4.9 ml (5 ml metric) |
| 1 ounce (weight) | 28.35 g |
| 1 pound | 453.6 g |
Grams in a cup
| Ingredient | Grams per US cup |
|---|---|
| All-purpose flour (maida) | 125 |
| Whole wheat flour (atta) | 120 |
| Gram flour (besan) | 92 |
| Sugar | 200 |
| Butter | 227 |
| Uncooked rice | 185 |
| Milk | 244 |
These are for spooned and levelled cups. Scooping flour straight from the bag packs it in and can add 20%.
Which cup does my recipe use?
American recipes use the 236.6 ml US cup; Australian, New Zealand and many Indian recipes use the 250 ml metric cup. The difference is about 5%, which rarely matters in a curry but can matter in a cake. When a recipe gives grams, use them: weighing is the most accurate way to bake.
Tips
- Use the swap button to convert back the other way.
- Fluid ounces measure volume; ounces measure weight. They match only for water.
- For butter, 1 tablespoon is about 14 g, and 100 g is about 7 tablespoons.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup?
It depends on the ingredient: a US cup holds about 125 g of all-purpose flour (maida), 120 g of atta, 200 g of sugar, 227 g of butter or 185 g of uncooked rice.
How many tablespoons are in a cup?
16 tablespoons in a US cup, and 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon.
Is an Indian or metric cup the same as a US cup?
Not quite. A metric cup is 250 ml, a US cup 237 ml, about 5% less. For most cooking the difference doesn’t matter; for baking, choose the right one or weigh.
Why weigh ingredients for baking?
A scooped cup of flour can weigh 20% more than a spooned and levelled one. Grams are the same every time.
