A GST-ready tax invoice

If you’re registered under GST in India, every B2B sale and most B2C sales need a tax invoice with specific details. This page starts with the GST layout: “Tax Invoice” as the title, GSTIN fields for you and your customer, HSN/SAC codes on each item, place of supply, and the tax split calculated for you.

CGST, SGST or IGST?

The rule depends on where the supply takes place:

  • Same state: when you and the place of supply are in the same state, the GST rate is split equally into CGST and SGST (or UTGST). An 18% item shows CGST 9% and SGST 9%.
  • Other state: for inter-state supplies, the full rate is charged as IGST.

Choose “Same state” or “Other state” and the invoice changes accordingly. Items with different GST rates (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) are grouped and totalled separately, as the law requires.

Details worth getting right

Use a unique, sequential invoice number for each financial year. Write the place of supply with the state code, for example “27 - Maharashtra”. Enter HSN codes for goods and SAC codes for services. Discounts given on the invoice reduce the taxable value before GST is calculated.

What this tool doesn’t do

Atifo creates the invoice PDF. It doesn’t file GST returns or generate e-invoices with an IRN, which large businesses must create through the government’s invoice registration portal. Check current rules with your accountant if you’re unsure.

Frequently asked questions

When do I charge CGST + SGST and when IGST?

If you and your customer are in the same state (intra-state supply), charge CGST and SGST, each half of the GST rate. If the place of supply is in another state, charge IGST at the full rate.

What must a GST tax invoice include?

Your name, address and GSTIN; a unique invoice number and date; the customer’s details (and GSTIN if registered); HSN/SAC codes; quantity and value; the tax rate and amount; and the place of supply. This template includes all of them.

Is HSN code mandatory?

Businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore must show 6-digit HSN codes; smaller businesses show 4 digits on B2B invoices. Check the current rules or ask your CA if unsure.

Does Atifo file my GST returns or generate e-invoices?

No. This creates the invoice PDF only. E-invoicing (IRN and QR from the IRP) applies above a turnover threshold and must be done through the government portal or your accounting software.
