Compare pay quoted in different ways
Freelance projects quote hourly rates, part-time jobs pay by the day, and salaried jobs quote a monthly or yearly figure. To compare them fairly you need the same unit. Enter any one of them and the calculator shows all five: hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.
A wage calculator to convert an hourly wage to annual salary, or annual salary to hourly, and work out your per hour salary.
How it’s calculated
- Weekly pay = hourly rate × hours per week
- Yearly pay = weekly pay × paid weeks per year
- Monthly pay = yearly pay ÷ 12
- Daily pay = weekly pay ÷ working days per week
At 500 an hour, 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, that’s 20,000 a week, 10.4 lakh (1,040,000) a year and about 86,667 a month.
Choosing the right weeks
Employees with paid holidays should use 52 weeks. Freelancers and contractors aren’t paid for holidays, sick days or the gaps between projects, so 44–48 billable weeks is more realistic. This is why freelance hourly rates need to be well above an employee’s equivalent hourly pay.
Setting a freelance rate
Work backwards: decide the yearly income you need, choose “Year”, and enter it with your realistic billable hours. The hourly figure is your minimum rate before tax, software, equipment and the benefits an employer would have paid.

How do I find my hourly rate from a monthly salary?
Multiply the monthly salary by 12 and divide by the hours you work in a year. Choose “Month”, enter your salary and read the hourly figure.
Should I use 52 weeks?
Use 52 if your holidays are paid. Freelancers and contractors who aren’t paid for time off should use fewer, such as 46–48 weeks.
