Hijri and Gregorian dates
The Hijri calendar is lunar: each month has 29 or 30 days and a year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. That’s why Ramadan and the Eids move earlier each Gregorian year.
This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official civil calendar of Saudi Arabia, which modern browsers include. It’s the calendar used on Saudi government forms, contracts and ID documents, and it covers 1300 to 1600 AH (roughly 1883 to 2174).
When the date can differ by a day
- Moon sighting: the start of months with religious significance, such as Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah, is confirmed by sighting the new moon, so the observed first day can differ from the calculated one.
- Other countries: some countries use a different calculation or their own sighting, so their Hijri date can be a day apart from Umm al-Qura.
For official dates, follow the announcement from the authority in your country.
Converting by hand
There’s no simple formula, because the length of each Hijri month varies. A rough rule: Gregorian year ≈ Hijri year × 0.97 + 622. 1447 AH runs from late June 2025 to mid-June 2026. For an exact day, use the converter.
