An increment calculator and salary increase calculator: work out your hike percentage or your new salary after a raise.
The formulas
- New salary = current salary × (1 + hike ÷ 100)
- Hike % = (new salary − current salary) ÷ current salary × 100
So a 10% hike on 50,000 a month is 55,000, an increase of 5,000 a month or 60,000 a year. Going from 50,000 to 56,000 is a 12% hike.
Is your raise beating inflation?
A raise only improves your life if it outpaces rising prices. Add the inflation rate and the calculator shows your real hike: (1 + hike) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. A 10% hike with 6% inflation is a real raise of about 3.8%. A 4% hike with 6% inflation means your salary buys about 1.9% less than last year.
Monthly or yearly figures
Use whichever you know; the result is in the same period. Remember that hikes are usually quoted on CTC or gross pay. Your take-home pay rises by less, because income tax and PF rise with your salary; check the new figure with the salary after tax calculator.
Negotiating a new job
When switching jobs, compare the offer with your current pay using the “New salary” option to see the jump as a percentage. To compare an hourly or freelance rate with a salary, use the hourly to annual salary calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a salary hike percentage?
Subtract the current salary from the new one, divide by the current salary and multiply by 100. From 50,000 to 56,000 is (6,000 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 12%.
What is a good salary hike?
It depends on your industry and country. A raise smaller than inflation means your pay buys less than before; job changes often bring bigger jumps than yearly appraisals.
What is a real hike?
Your raise after allowing for inflation: (1 + hike) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. A 10% hike with 6% inflation is a real raise of about 3.8%.
Does the hike apply to CTC or in-hand pay?
Hikes are usually quoted on CTC or gross pay. Your in-hand pay rises by less because tax and PF rise too.
