About these phonics worksheets
Phonics links sounds to letters. These worksheets cover beginning sounds, the digraphs sh, ch and th, consonant blends like st and fr, and short and long vowel sounds (cat vs cake), with a sorting task for digraphs.
For letter recognition and handwriting, see the tracing worksheets.
What the worksheet covers
The question bank for this topic has 9 items to sort, 12 multiple-choice questions and 6 fill-in-the-blank sentences. Each worksheet mixes a selection, so no two are the same.
- Question types: fill in the blanks, multiple choice, sort the words.
- Best for: kindergarten–grade 2 (ages 5–8).
Teaching tips
- Say each word aloud before choosing: phonics is about sounds, not spellings.

Frequently asked questions
What is a digraph?
Two letters that make one sound, such as sh in ship, ch in chair and th in thumb.
Can I print it in black and white?
Yes. The worksheet uses light tints that print clearly in grey, or pick the grey colour theme.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet ends with an answer key on its own page. Switch it off if you’re giving the sheet as a test.
Will every worksheet be the same?
No. Each tap of “New worksheet” picks a different mix of questions from the topic’s question bank, so you can give different versions to different students.
Can I choose the kinds of questions?
Yes. Switch each section on or off (matching, fill in the blanks, true or false, multiple choice and more) and choose how many questions go in each.
