How to calculate your running pace
- 1
Choose what to calculate: pace, time or distance.
- 2
Pick kilometres or miles.
- 3
Enter the other two values, or tap a race distance.
- 4
Read your pace, speed and the splits.
Pace, time and distance
Know two and the calculator finds the third. Enter a distance and a time to get your pace, a distance and a pace to get your finish time, or a time and a pace to see how far you’d go. It works in kilometres or miles and also shows your speed in km/h and splits for every km or mile.
A running pace calculator in minutes per km and per mile: a marathon pace calculator and walking pace calculator in one.
The formulas
- Pace = time ÷ distance
- Time = pace × distance
- Distance = time ÷ pace
- Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace in minutes per km
10 km in 55:00 is 5:30 per km, or 10.9 km/h. At 5:00 per km a marathon takes 3:30:59.
Race distances
Tap a chip to fill in a standard distance: 5K, 10K, half marathon (21.0975 km) and marathon (42.195 km). For a sub-2-hour half marathon you need to average faster than 5:41 per km; for a sub-4-hour marathon, faster than 5:41 per km too, since that target is exactly twice the distance in twice the time.
Using splits
The splits list shows your time at each km or mile marker at an even pace. Write a few on your hand or set them on your watch for race day. Most runners do best starting slightly slower than target pace and speeding up a little in the second half.
Pace for walkers
Brisk walking is usually 9–11 minutes per km (5.5–6.5 km/h). Use the calculator to plan a daily 30-minute walk, or a pilgrimage or charity walk.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your time by the distance. 10 km in 55 minutes is 5.5 minutes per km, which is 5:30 per km, or about 10.9 km/h.
What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?
Faster than 5:41 per km (9:09 per mile). Choose “Pace”, tap Half marathon and enter 1:59:59.
How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
Multiply by 1.609. A 5:00 per km pace is about 8:03 per mile. The calculator shows both.
What are splits?
Your running time at each km or mile marker at an even pace. Use them to check you’re on target during a race.
