How to make a contact QR code

  1. 1

Fill in the details you want to share: name, phone, email, company and more.

  2. 2

Keep it short: fewer fields make a simpler code that scans from further away.

  3. 3

Download an SVG for your business card printer, or a PNG for your email signature.

  4. 4

Scan it with your phone to check it opens “Add contact”.

A business card that saves itself

Typing a name, phone number and email from a paper card is tedious, and that’s when contacts get lost. A vCard QR code on your card, flyer, email signature or conference badge lets people save your details in one scan. Their phone opens “Add contact” with everything already filled in.

A QR code for contact details, perfect as a business card QR code.

What to include

Name, phone and email are the essentials. Company, job title, website and address are optional. Every field you add makes the code denser, and dense codes need to be printed larger to scan reliably. For a standard business card, name, phone, email and website work well at about 2 × 2 cm.

Design tips

  • Keep dark modules on a light background; light-on-dark codes fail on many phones.
  • Leave a white margin around the code, at least the width of the corner squares’ border.
  • Use the SVG download for print so the code stays crisp at any size.
  • Test the printed proof with both an iPhone and an Android phone.

Static and private

Your details are stored in the code itself using the vCard 3.0 standard, so it keeps working forever and doesn’t rely on any website. That also means it can’t be updated later: if your number changes, make a new code. Nothing you enter is uploaded. To share a chat link instead of a contact, try the WhatsApp QR code generator.

Frequently asked questions

What is a vCard?

vCard is the standard format phones use for contacts. Scanning a vCard QR code opens “Add to contacts” with your details already filled in.

How big should it be on a business card?

At least 2 × 2 cm. If you include an address and several fields, make it a little larger or use fewer fields.

Can I update the details later?

No. Your details are stored inside the code itself, which is why it never expires. If something changes, make a new code.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Both scan vCard codes with the built-in camera app.
