A planning timeline

• 12 months or more: agree a budget and guest count, then book the venue and date. Popular venues and photographers book up early in wedding season.
• 6 to 12 months: book the photographer, caterer and decorator, send save-the-dates to guests who need to travel, and start shopping for outfits.
• 3 to 6 months: order the invitations, and book makeup, music and entertainment. Arrange travel and stays for out-of-town guests.
• 1 to 3 months: send invitations, have the final fittings and confirm every vendor, time and payment in writing.
• The last month: give the caterer final numbers, write a schedule for each event and pay what’s due.
• The final week: pack, hand the schedule to someone you trust, rest and enjoy it.

For weddings with several events, such as engagement, mehendi or henna night, and reception, run the countdown for each date.
