The right barcode for the job
Barcodes look alike but follow different standards, and scanners expect the right one:
A free barcode maker: EAN 13 barcode generator, Code 128 barcode and UPC barcode generator.
- Code 128 holds letters, numbers and symbols compactly. Use it for inventory, asset tags, shipping labels and internal product codes.
- EAN-13 is the standard retail barcode in India, Europe and most of the world. EAN-8 is its short form for small packages.
- UPC-A is the retail standard in the US and Canada.
- ITF-14 marks outer cartons and cases.
- Code 39 suits older systems, ID badges and some government forms. Codabar and MSI appear in libraries, labs and shelf labels.
Check digits done for you
EAN, UPC and ITF codes end with a check digit calculated from the others. Type the digits without it and it’s added automatically. If you type the full number and the check digit is wrong, Atifo tells you instead of producing a barcode that won’t scan.
About retail product codes
You can draw any number, but to sell through supermarkets and marketplaces your products need numbers licensed by GS1 (GS1 India in India). Use Code 128 for your own labels.
Print-ready output
Download the SVG for labels and packaging: it stays perfectly sharp at any size. Keep dark bars on a light background and a clear margin on both sides. For links and contact details, a QR code holds far more information.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a barcode to sell my product in shops?
You can draw any EAN-13 or UPC number here, but retail barcodes must use numbers licensed to your company by GS1 (GS1 India in India). Shops scan them against the GS1 database.
Which barcode type should I use?
Code 128 for internal labels, inventory and shipping, because it handles letters and numbers. EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products, ITF-14 for cartons, and Code 39 for older systems and ID badges.
What is a check digit?
The last digit of EAN and UPC codes, calculated from the others so scanners can detect misreads. Enter the digits without it and it’s added automatically.
How do I print barcodes that scan reliably?
Use the SVG, keep dark bars on a white background, leave white space on both sides, and don’t shrink it below about 80% of its standard size.
