A year of rent receipts in one go
Salaried employees in India can reduce their taxable income through House Rent Allowance (HRA), but employers ask for rent receipts as proof. Writing twelve receipts by hand is tedious. Enter the details once and Atifo creates one receipt per month for the whole period, three to a page, ready to print and sign.
Create a house rent receipt in the standard rent receipt format for HRA (an HRA rent receipt) and download a rent receipt PDF.
What each receipt contains
- The tenant’s name and the rented property address.
- The month and dates covered, and the payment date.
- The rent in figures and in words.
- The payment mode.
- The landlord’s name, address and PAN.
- A receipt number and a signature line for the landlord.
When the landlord’s PAN is needed
If you pay more than ₹1,00,000 in rent in a financial year, your employer will usually ask for your landlord’s PAN. The form tells you when this applies. If your landlord doesn’t have a PAN, employers typically ask for a signed declaration instead.
Revenue stamps for cash rent
When rent above ₹5,000 is paid in cash, each receipt should carry a ₹1 revenue stamp signed by the landlord, so a stamp box is added automatically. Rent paid by bank transfer or UPI is easier to prove, because your bank statement backs up the receipts.
Keep it genuine
Only create receipts for rent you actually paid. HRA claims can be checked against bank records and the landlord’s tax return. Get each receipt signed, and keep copies for at least as long as your tax records.
Frequently asked questions
Is the landlord’s PAN mandatory?
If the rent you pay is more than ₹1,00,000 a year (over about ₹8,333 a month), employers ask for the landlord’s PAN to allow your HRA exemption. Without it, the claim may be refused.
Does a rent receipt need a revenue stamp?
Receipts for cash rent above ₹5,000 should carry a ₹1 revenue stamp signed by the landlord. Payments by bank transfer or UPI don’t need one, which is why the box only appears for cash.
Do rent receipts need the landlord’s signature?
Yes. Print the receipts and ask your landlord to sign each one. Many employers also accept scanned signed copies.
Can I make receipts for past months?
Yes, choose any period of up to 24 months. Only make receipts for rent you actually paid; HRA claims can be checked against bank records.
