About these algebra worksheets

Algebra uses letters to stand for numbers. These worksheets build the basics: substituting a value to evaluate an expression (3x + 2 when x = 4), simplifying by collecting like terms (2x + 3 + 5x + 1 = 7x + 4), and translating words into expressions (“5 less than x” is x − 5).

Settings you can change

Each sheet has 20 questions by default (from 6 to 40), a name, date and score line, and an answer key on a separate page. Best for grades 6–8 (ages 11–14).

  • Type: Evaluate expressions, Simplify (like terms), Write expressions from words.

Teaching tips

  • Replace the letter with the number in brackets first.
  • Only like terms (same letter) can be combined.
  • Read word phrases carefully: “less than” reverses the order.

New questions every time

The questions are written by rules on your device, not picked from a fixed sheet, so every tap of “New worksheet” gives a different set. Nothing is uploaded. Explore all math worksheets.

Frequently asked questions

Do values include negative numbers?

Yes, some questions substitute negative values, which practises integer rules too.

Can I make a different algebra worksheet for each student?

Yes. Tap “New worksheet” for a fresh set of questions with the same settings. Each sheet has its own answer key, so you can hand out different versions.

Is it really free to print?

Yes. There’s no signup and no limit. The worksheets are generated on your device, and you can use them at home or in class.

What is the worksheet code?

Every sheet prints a short code. Typing the same code with the same settings rebuilds exactly the same questions, so you can reprint a sheet later or share the code with another teacher.

Does every worksheet come with an answer key?

Yes. The answers print on a separate page at the end of the PDF. Switch “Answer key” off if you only want the questions.
