About these fraction addition worksheets

With the same denominator, add the numerators and keep the denominator. With different denominators, first rewrite both fractions over a common denominator. Mixed numbers can be added as wholes and fractions separately, or converted to improper fractions first. Every answer in the key is in simplest form.

Settings you can change

Each sheet has 20 questions by default (from 6 to 40), a name, date and score line, and an answer key on a separate page. Best for grades 4–7 (ages 9–13).

  • Denominators: Same denominator, Different denominators, Mixed numbers.
  • Answers: Mixed numbers, Improper fractions.

Teaching tips

  • Find the lowest common denominator to keep numbers small.
  • Never add the denominators.
  • Simplify at the end and convert improper answers to mixed numbers.

New questions every time

The questions are written by rules on your device, not picked from a fixed sheet, so every tap of “New worksheet” gives a different set. Nothing is uploaded. Explore all math worksheets.

Frequently asked questions

Are answers given as mixed numbers?

By default yes, e.g. 1 1/4. Choose “Improper fractions” to get answers like 5/4 instead.

Is it really free to print?

Yes. There’s no signup and no limit. The worksheets are generated on your device, and you can use them at home or in class.

Which grades are these worksheets for?

Grades 4–7 (ages 9–13), depending on the settings you choose. Switch on “Big print” for younger children.

What is the worksheet code?

Every sheet prints a short code. Typing the same code with the same settings rebuilds exactly the same questions, so you can reprint a sheet later or share the code with another teacher.

Can I make a different fraction addition worksheet for each student?

Yes. Tap “New worksheet” for a fresh set of questions with the same settings. Each sheet has its own answer key, so you can hand out different versions.
