About these fraction subtraction worksheets

Subtracting fractions follows the same rules as adding: a common denominator first, then subtract the numerators. With mixed numbers, borrowing a whole may be needed (3 1/4 − 1 3/4). The larger fraction always comes first, so answers are never negative.

Settings you can change

Each sheet has 20 questions by default (from 6 to 40), a name, date and score line, and an answer key on a separate page. Best for grades 4–7 (ages 9–13).

  • Denominators: Same denominator, Different denominators, Mixed numbers.
  • Answers: Mixed numbers, Improper fractions.

Teaching tips

  • Compare the fractions first to predict the size of the answer.
  • When borrowing from a mixed number, a whole becomes denominator/denominator.
  • Check by adding the answer to the smaller fraction.

New questions every time

The questions are written by rules on your device, not picked from a fixed sheet, so every tap of “New worksheet” gives a different set. Nothing is uploaded. Explore all math worksheets.

Frequently asked questions

Can the answer be zero?

Occasionally, when both fractions are equal. The key shows 0.

What is the worksheet code?

Every sheet prints a short code. Typing the same code with the same settings rebuilds exactly the same questions, so you can reprint a sheet later or share the code with another teacher.

Is it really free to print?

Yes. There’s no signup and no limit. The worksheets are generated on your device, and you can use them at home or in class.

Can I make a different fraction subtraction worksheet for each student?

Yes. Tap “New worksheet” for a fresh set of questions with the same settings. Each sheet has its own answer key, so you can hand out different versions.

Which grades are these worksheets for?

Grades 4–7 (ages 9–13), depending on the settings you choose. Switch on “Big print” for younger children.
