Smaller files that work everywhere

PNG is great for screenshots and graphics, but photos saved as PNG are huge, and many upload forms accept only JPG or JPEG. Converting to JPG typically cuts a photo’s size by 70–90%, and the result opens in any app.

Works the same for PNG to JPEG.

Transparent backgrounds

JPG has no transparency. Logos, stickers and cut-out images need a colour behind them, so choose one before converting. White is the default and suits documents; pick another colour to match a website or slide background.

Choosing the quality

The quality slider controls the trade-off between file size and detail. 90% is visually identical to the original for photos. For screenshots with small text, raise it towards 100% to keep letters crisp. If you need the smallest file at a specific size, use Compress image to size afterwards.

Screenshots: JPG or not?

Screenshots of text and interfaces have sharp edges that JPG can soften slightly. If you’re sharing them on the web, PNG to WebP keeps edges sharper at a small size. If a form demands JPG, this page is the right choice.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to the transparent background?

JPG can’t be transparent, so those areas are filled with the colour you choose. White suits documents and most uses; pick another colour to match where the image will go.

How much smaller will the file be?

Photos saved as PNG often shrink by 70–90% as JPG. Screenshots and flat graphics shrink less, and very sharp text can look slightly soft, so check before you send.

Why do forms ask for JPG instead of PNG?

JPG files are smaller and every system can read them, so many upload forms only accept JPG or JPEG.

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. They are the same format; .jpg is just the shorter file extension.
