How to compress an image

  1. 1

Tap “Choose images” and pick one or more photos, or drop them onto the box.

  2. 2

Keep “Balanced” for most uses, or pick High quality or Smallest.

  3. 3

Optional: change the format or cap the size, e.g. 1920 px for the web.

  4. 4

Tap “Compress images” and download your files (several come as a ZIP).

What compression actually does

A photo from a modern phone is often 3–8 MB because it’s saved at very high quality, with more detail than any screen can show. Compression finds a better balance. JPG and WebP files are saved again at a carefully chosen quality, and PNG files get a reduced colour palette, the same trick TinyPNG uses. The result is usually half the size or less, with no difference you can see at normal viewing size.

This image compressor (or image size reducer) will reduce image size and photo size: compress a photo, compress JPG or compress PNG files without visible loss.

Choosing a level

  • High quality keeps nearly everything, for photos you might print.
  • Balanced suits sharing, email and websites. It’s the right choice almost every time.
  • Smallest also caps the longest side at 1600 pixels, for strict limits and slow connections.

If you need to hit a specific number, such as “under 100 KB”, use Compress image to size instead. It searches for the best quality that fits.

Honest results

If an image is already well compressed and the new version would be bigger, Atifo keeps your original and tells you. Transparent PNGs stay transparent unless you convert them to JPG.

Tips

Resizing saves more than anything else: a 4000-pixel photo shown on a phone needs only about 1280 pixels. For photos with location data, run them through Remove EXIF data before sharing.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my photos get?

Phone photos usually shrink by 50–80% on Balanced with no difference you can see on a screen. Screenshots and graphics saved as PNG often shrink by 60% or more. Already-optimised images may barely change; Atifo then keeps your original.

Does compressing a PNG keep the transparency?

Yes. PNG compression reduces the number of colours (like TinyPNG does) and keeps transparent areas transparent. If you convert to JPG, transparent areas are filled with white.

Which format gives the smallest file?

WebP is usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality and supports transparency. JPG is the safest choice for forms and older apps. PNG is best for screenshots and graphics with sharp edges.

Can I compress many images at once?

Yes, up to 50 images of up to 50 MB each. They are processed one at a time so your phone doesn’t run out of memory, and you download them together as a ZIP.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression runs in your browser on your own device. Your photos are never sent to a server.
