The right format for the job
- JPG is the universal choice for photos. Every app, website and upload form accepts it. It doesn’t support transparency.
- PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with text. Photos saved as PNG are large.
- WebP is the modern web format: smaller than JPG at the same quality and it supports transparency. All current browsers show it, but some older apps and forms don’t accept it.

What you can convert from
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG work in every modern browser. HEIC photos from iPhones open in Safari; in other browsers, set the iPhone camera to “Most Compatible” to save JPGs instead. Animated GIF and WebP files are converted using their first frame.
Transparency and colour
When converting to JPG, transparent areas need a colour. White is the default, but you can pick any colour to match where the image will be used.

Frequently asked questions
Which formats can I convert from?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG on all modern browsers. HEIC (iPhone photos) works in Safari. Animated GIFs are converted using their first frame.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?
JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a colour you choose (white by default). Convert to PNG or WebP to keep it.
Will converting reduce quality?
Converting to PNG is lossless. JPG and WebP use the quality you set; 90% looks identical to the original for almost every photo.
Why can’t my browser create WebP?
Some older Safari versions can read WebP but not create it. Atifo tells you if that happens; choose JPG or PNG instead, or use Chrome or Firefox.
