See exactly what changed
When a contract comes back “with a few small edits”, a teacher returns a corrected essay, or two versions of a document get mixed up, reading them side by side is slow and unreliable. Paste both versions and every difference is highlighted: removed text in red with a strike-through, added text in green.
A diff checker to compare text: find the difference between two texts or compare two documents.
Lines, words or characters
- Words is best for prose: articles, essays, letters and contracts. Changed words are highlighted within the sentence.
- Lines is best for code, configuration, lists and data. Each changed line is marked with − or +, with line numbers for both versions.
- Characters finds tiny changes, like a single digit in an account number or a typo in a name.
Ignore what doesn’t matter
“Ignore capitals” hides changes like “Agreement” to “agreement”. “Ignore spacing” hides extra spaces and line wrapping, which often change when text is copied between apps. The summary shows how many words, lines or characters were added and removed.
Confidential documents stay private
Comparison runs entirely in your browser, so draft contracts, unpublished manuscripts and source code are never uploaded. Use “Copy changes as text” to paste the differences into an email, marked with [+added] and [-removed]. For documents in PDF form, extract the text with PDF to text first.
Frequently asked questions
Should I compare by lines, words or characters?
Words suits essays, articles and contracts. Lines suits code, lists and data. Characters is best for short strings like reference numbers, where a single changed digit matters.
Can I ignore changes in capitals or spacing?
Yes. Switch on “Ignore capitals” or “Ignore spacing” to hide changes that don’t affect the meaning.
Is it safe to compare confidential documents?
Yes. The comparison runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so contracts and private drafts stay on your device.
Can I compare two PDF or Word files?
Copy the text from each document and paste it here. For PDFs, PDF to text gets the text out first.
