More than a word count
Teachers set essay limits, editors ask for 800 words, and job applications cap answers at 250. This counter updates as you type, so you can trim or expand without checking again and again. Alongside words you get characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus reading and speaking time, which helps when you’re preparing a speech or a presentation script.
Get a word count and character count as you type, and count words in any text. It’s a words counter online with no limit.
Counts that work in every language
Many online counters simply split text on spaces, which gets Hindi, Chinese, Thai and Japanese wrong. Atifo uses your browser’s built-in language rules to find word boundaries, so a Hindi paragraph or a mixed Hinglish message is counted the way a reader would count it. Emoji and accented letters count as single characters.
Spot repetition
The “Most used words” panel lists the words you lean on most, with how often they appear. Common filler words like “the” and “and” are skipped by default. It’s a quick way to catch an essay that says “important” nine times, or to check keyword use in a blog post without overdoing it.
Private by design
Your text never leaves the page. Nothing is uploaded or saved, so you can safely check confidential documents, applications and unpublished work. For limits measured in characters, such as social posts or SEO titles, the character counter puts those numbers first.

Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter decide what a word is?
It uses your browser’s language-aware word segmentation, so Hindi, Tamil, Chinese and other scripts are counted correctly. Hyphenated words like “well-known” count as one word, as in Microsoft Word.
Do spaces count as characters?
The main “Characters” count includes spaces, like most forms and social networks. “Characters without spaces” is shown under More details.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is stored or uploaded, and it disappears when you close the page.
Can I count words in a PDF or Word file?
Copy the text from the document and paste it here. For a PDF, you can also use PDF to text first and then paste the result.
