How to convert PDF to Word

  1. 1

    Choose your PDF.

  2. 2

Pick “Editable text” to change the wording, or “Exact look” to keep the layout as pictures.

  3. 3

Tap “Convert to Word” and open the .docx in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

Two ways to convert

PDFs don’t store paragraphs. They store pieces of text placed at exact positions on a page. Turning that back into an editable document means rebuilding the structure, so Atifo gives you a choice:

This PDF to Word converter is free and creates PDF to DOCX output. It is PDF to Word editable text where the PDF has a text layer.

  • Editable text reads the text on each page, joins lines into paragraphs, recognises headings from larger text, rebuilds bulleted and numbered lists, keeps bold and italic, and rejoins words hyphenated across lines. You get a clean .docx you can edit freely.
  • Exact look places each page in Word as a picture. It looks identical to the PDF, including tables, images and signatures, but the words can’t be edited. It also works for scanned documents.

Getting the best result

Editable text works best for documents created on a computer: reports, letters, articles and contracts. Tables become plain lines of text, and images are left out, so check those sections after converting. Multi-column layouts, such as newsletters, may need some tidying.

Scanned PDFs

A scan is a photo of a page, with no text inside it. Choose Exact look to get it into Word. Atifo doesn’t offer OCR (reading text from images) yet.

Private conversion

PDFs often contain personal or business information. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, and the PDF is never uploaded. To go the other way, use Word to PDF. If you only need the words, PDF to text is even quicker.

Frequently asked questions

Which option should I choose?

Choose Editable text when you need to change the words: paragraphs, headings, lists, bold and italic are rebuilt. Choose Exact look when the layout matters more than editing, or when the PDF is a scan.

Will tables and images come through?

In Editable text mode, tables become plain text and images are left out. In Exact look mode, every page, including tables and images, appears exactly as in the PDF.

Can it convert scanned PDFs?

Scans have no text layer to edit, so use Exact look to put the pages into Word as pictures. Turning a scan into editable text needs OCR, which Atifo doesn’t offer yet.

Is it safe for confidential PDFs?

Yes. The conversion happens entirely in your browser, and the PDF is never uploaded.
