About these decimal subtraction worksheets
Subtracting decimals uses column subtraction with the decimal points lined up. When the top number has fewer decimal places, add zeros so there’s something to borrow from (5.2 − 1.75 becomes 5.20 − 1.75).
Settings you can change
Each sheet has 20 questions by default (from 6 to 40), a name, date and score line, and an answer key on a separate page. Best for grades 4–6 (ages 9–12).
- Decimal places: Tenths, Hundredths, Thousandths.
- Number size: Under 10, Under 100, Under 1,000.
- Layout: Column (stacked), In a line.
Teaching tips
- Add zeros to make decimal places equal.
- Check by adding the answer to the number subtracted.
- Use change-from-a-note problems for practice.
New questions every time
The questions are written by rules on your device, not picked from a fixed sheet, so every tap of “New worksheet” gives a different set. Nothing is uploaded. Explore all math worksheets.
Frequently asked questions
Are answers ever negative?
No. The larger number always comes first.
Can I make a different decimal subtraction worksheet for each student?
Yes. Tap “New worksheet” for a fresh set of questions with the same settings. Each sheet has its own answer key, so you can hand out different versions.
Is it really free to print?
Yes. There’s no signup and no limit. The worksheets are generated on your device, and you can use them at home or in class.
What is the worksheet code?
Every sheet prints a short code. Typing the same code with the same settings rebuilds exactly the same questions, so you can reprint a sheet later or share the code with another teacher.
Does every worksheet come with an answer key?
Yes. The answers print on a separate page at the end of the PDF. Switch “Answer key” off if you only want the questions.
