How to remove a password from a PDF

  1. 1

    Choose the password-protected PDF.

  2. 2

Enter its password (or its permissions password if it only has restrictions).

  3. 3

Tap “Remove password” and download the unlocked copy.

Stop typing the password every time

Bank statements, credit card bills, payslips, Form 16, insurance policies and e-statements usually arrive password-protected, often with your date of birth, PAN or customer ID as the password. That’s sensible for email, but annoying when you need to merge, print, compress or upload the file. If you know the password, Atifo saves a copy that opens without it.

Use it to unsecure PDF files, or unprotect a PDF, that you have the password for. This PDF unlocker can decrypt the PDF and remove PDF protection (remove security from a PDF) in a few seconds. It’s a PDF password remover only for people who already know the password.

Only with the correct password

Atifo never cracks or guesses passwords. Protection is removed only after you enter the right one:

  • PDFs that need a password to open: enter that password and the unlocked copy opens freely.
  • PDFs that open but block printing, copying or editing: these have a separate permissions (owner) password. Enter it to remove the restrictions.

If the password is wrong, nothing changes, and you can try again. The check happens on your device.

Nothing else changes

Only the encryption is removed. Pages, text, images, links, form fields and bookmarks stay exactly as they were, and the original file on your device isn’t touched. Your PDF and password are never uploaded.

Common passwords for Indian statements

Many senders explain the format in the email, for example the first four letters of your name in capitals followed by your date of birth as DDMM, or your PAN in capitals. Check the email or the sender’s website if you’re unsure.

Keep the unlocked copy safe

An unlocked PDF can be opened by anyone who gets it. If you need to send it on, consider adding your own password with Protect PDF. Once unlocked, you can also merge or compress it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a password I don’t know?

No. Atifo only removes protection after you enter the correct password. It’s meant for your own files, such as bank statements, e-statements and payslips that are password-protected with your date of birth or PAN.

Why do bank statements and payslips have passwords?

Banks, employers and tax portals protect them to keep your data safe in email. The password is usually explained in the email, for example the first letters of your name plus your date of birth.

What is a permissions password?

Some PDFs open freely but block printing, copying or editing. Those restrictions are controlled by a separate permissions (owner) password, which you need to remove them.

Is the unlocked PDF identical to the original?

Yes. Only the encryption is removed; pages, text, images, forms and bookmarks are unchanged.
