CSV for uploads and imports

Many systems only accept CSV: bulk uploads on government and exam portals, contact imports for email and WhatsApp tools, bank and accounting software, e-commerce product feeds and databases. Excel can save CSV too, but its encoding and separator settings regularly cause garbled characters or columns that don’t line up.

Also converts XLS to CSV, and saves Excel to CSV UTF-8 so Indian names and ₹ stay correct.

Getting the format right

  • Separator: comma is the standard. Choose semicolon for systems set up for European number formats, where the comma is the decimal mark, or tab (TSV) when your data contains lots of commas.
  • Excel-friendly UTF-8: adds an invisible marker at the start of the file so Excel opens ₹, accented letters and Hindi correctly. Most websites accept it; switch it off only if a system specifically complains.
  • All sheets: each sheet becomes its own CSV, delivered as a ZIP.

What ends up in the CSV

CSV stores plain values, so numbers and dates are written as they’re shown in Excel, formulas are replaced by their results, and formatting such as colours and fonts is dropped. Merged cells keep their value in the top-left cell only. Check the preview to make sure you’ve picked the right sheet.

Private conversion

Your workbook is read in the background on your device and never uploaded, which matters for contact lists, payroll and customer data. To go back from CSV to a formatted workbook, use CSV to Excel. If a portal limits the number of rows per upload, use Split Excel.

Frequently asked questions

Why do ₹ and Hindi characters look wrong when I open a CSV in Excel?

Excel assumes an old encoding unless the CSV starts with a byte-order mark. Keep “Excel-friendly UTF-8” switched on and every character opens correctly.

Which separator should I use?

Comma is the standard and what most websites and databases expect. Use semicolon if your Excel uses commas for decimals (common in Europe), and tab for data that contains many commas.

Can I convert every sheet at once?

Yes. Switch on “All sheets” to get one CSV per sheet in a ZIP file.

What happens to formulas and formatting?

CSV holds only values, so formulas are replaced by their results and numbers appear as they’re displayed in Excel. Colours and fonts are not part of CSV.
