How to make a passport size photo

A passport photo in three steps

Take a photo of yourself against a plain, light-coloured wall in good, even light. Choose your country’s size, then fit your face into the oval guide: the top of your head on the upper yellow line and your chin on the lower one. Atifo crops the photo to the exact shape and saves it at 300 DPI, the resolution photo labs print at.

Getting it accepted

Official rules vary by country and change over time, so check them before you print. Most require:

  • a plain white or light background with no shadows
  • a neutral expression with your mouth closed and eyes open
  • no glasses glare, hats or filters
  • a recent photo, usually from the last six months

For online applications

Portals often add a file-size limit. After making your photo, use Compress image to 50 KB or the general Compress image to size tool. Your photo is never uploaded to Atifo at any point.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a passport photo?

It depends on the country. India, the UK, the EU and Australia use 35 × 45 mm, the US uses 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), Canada uses 50 × 70 mm and China 33 × 48 mm. Always check the official rules for your application.

How do I print it at the right size?

Download the print sheet and print it at 100% or “actual size” on 4 × 6 inch photo paper or A4. Don’t choose “fit to page”, which changes the size. Cut along the light grey lines.

Can Atifo change the background to white?

Not automatically: removing backgrounds reliably needs a large AI model, which would be slow on phones. Take the photo against a plain white or light-grey wall and it will look right.

Is the photo good enough for online applications?

The photo is saved as a high-quality JPG at 300 DPI. If the portal also has a KB limit, use Compress image to size afterwards to bring it under the limit.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Your photo is cropped and saved entirely on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
