How to remove EXIF data from a photo

  1. 1

Choose your photos: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or AVIF.

  2. 2

See what each one contains, including whether it reveals where it was taken.

  3. 3

    Tap “Remove metadata”.

  4. 4

Download the clean copies and share those instead of the originals.

What your photos reveal

Every phone photo carries hidden details called metadata. EXIF data records the date and time, phone or camera model, lens and settings, and often the exact GPS coordinates where the picture was taken, accurate enough to identify a house. Editing apps add their own XMP data, and some files include author names or comments.

This EXIF remover will strip metadata: remove metadata from a photo, including GPS. Remove GPS from a photo (its location) before sharing it online.

Anyone who receives the original file can read all of this. Atifo shows you what each photo contains, with location data highlighted, before you clean it.

Removed without re-saving

For JPG, PNG and WebP, Atifo removes the metadata blocks and copies the image data byte for byte. Nothing is re-compressed, so quality is exactly the same and the file usually gets slightly smaller. HEIC and AVIF photos are saved as a fresh, clean JPG, because browsers can’t write those formats.

One detail is kept for JPGs: the orientation flag that tells apps which way up to show the photo. Without it, some photos would suddenly appear sideways. It contains no personal information.

When to clean your photos

  • before selling items online or posting photos taken at home
  • when sending photos as files in chat apps, which keeps the original data
  • before sharing via email or cloud links

Need to hide something visible, too? Use Blur image before you share.

Frequently asked questions

What is EXIF data?

Hidden information your phone or camera saves inside a photo: the date and time, the camera model, settings, and often the exact GPS location where it was taken. Anyone with the file can read it.

Does removing metadata reduce quality?

Not for JPG, PNG and WebP. Atifo removes only the metadata blocks and copies the image data byte for byte. HEIC and AVIF photos are saved as a new high-quality JPG.

Will my photo still be the right way up?

Yes. Atifo keeps the single orientation setting that tells apps which way up to show a JPG, and removes everything else.

Do social apps remove location data for me?

Many large social networks strip it, but messaging apps sending “as file”, email, cloud links and marketplaces often keep the original. Cleaning photos yourself is the safe default.
