How overtime is paid in Saudi Arabia
Article 107 of the Saudi Labor Law sets the pay for each overtime hour at the hourly wage plus 50% of the basic hourly wage. The two parts use different bases:
- Hourly wage: your basic salary plus fixed allowances (housing, transport), divided by 30 days and by your normal daily hours.
- The 50% extra: half of the basic hourly wage, worked out from the basic salary alone.
Example: basic 2,400 SAR, allowances 1,800 SAR, 8-hour days.
- Hourly wage: 4,200 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = 17.50 SAR
- Basic hourly wage: 2,400 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = 10 SAR
- Overtime rate: 17.50 + 50% × 10 = 22.50 SAR an hour
Ten overtime hours pay 225 SAR.
Holidays and time off instead
Hours worked on official holidays count as overtime. With the worker’s consent, the employer may give paid days off instead of overtime pay.
Normal working hours
The usual limit is 8 hours a day and 48 a week. During Ramadan, normal hours for Muslim workers drop to 6 a day, which raises the hourly wage, so enter 6 for overtime worked in Ramadan.
Check your contract
Some contracts or company rules say which allowances count, so use the amounts your employer actually uses. The Ministry also limits overtime in a year unless the worker agrees to more.
