How to calculate VAT

  1. 1

Choose the UAE (5%) or Saudi Arabia (15%), or type your own rate.

  2. 2

Pick “Add VAT” for a net price, or “Remove VAT” for a price that already includes it.

  3. 3

    Enter the amount.

  4. 4

Read the net amount, the VAT and the gross amount.

Add or remove VAT in one step

Use Add VAT when you know the net price, for example when writing a quote. Use Remove VAT when the amount already includes VAT, such as a receipt total, and you need the net figure for your books.

  • Adding: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100; gross = net + VAT.
  • Removing: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); VAT = gross − net.

So 1,000 SAR plus 15% is 1,150 SAR, and 1,050 AED including 5% VAT contains 50 AED of tax.

The rates

  • UAE: the standard rate is 5%, set by Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017 and administered by the Federal Tax Authority.
  • Saudi Arabia: the standard rate is 15%, administered by ZATCA.

Not everything is charged at the standard rate: some supplies are zero-rated (for example certain exports, international transport and some education and health services) and some are exempt. If a supply is zero-rated, set the rate to 0. Check your product or service with the tax authority if you’re unsure.

Rounding

The calculator shows exact amounts to two decimals. Invoicing software may round each line or the invoice total, so a printed invoice can differ by a fils or a halala. For a tax invoice with VAT columns, use Atifo’s free invoice generator and set the tax rate there.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?

The standard rate is 5% in the UAE and 15% in Saudi Arabia. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For 1,150 SAR including 15% VAT: 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = 1,000 net, so the VAT is 150.

How do I add VAT?

Multiply the net price by the rate. 1,000 AED plus 5% VAT is 1,000 + 50 = 1,050 AED.
