About the festival
Makar Sankranti is a harvest festival in mid-January, celebrated under different names in different parts of India. Kite flying is a major tradition, especially as Uttarayan in Gujarat, and tilgul (sesame and jaggery sweets) is shared. In 2027 it falls on 14 January.
Kite safety: in 2017 India’s National Green Tribunal banned nylon, synthetic and glass-coated kite string (manja) because it injures people, birds and animals. Fly kites with plain cotton thread, away from roads and power lines, and look out for birds.

Frequently asked questions
When is Makar Sankranti in 2027?
On 14 January 2027.
What is tilgul?
A sweet made from til (sesame) and gul (jaggery), shared during Makar Sankranti.
Is kite string dangerous?
Glass-coated and nylon or synthetic string (manja) can injure people and birds; India’s National Green Tribunal banned it in 2017. Use plain cotton thread.
Which paper should I use?
Plain A4 or US Letter paper works. For cards, card stock of about 160–200 gsm folds and stands better; for paint or markers, thicker paper stops colours bleeding through.
