About this printable
Fifteen Diwali words, from diya, rangoli and lantern to laddoo, marigold, toran, Dhanteras and Bhai Dooj, in a grid that changes each time. Easy goes across and down; medium adds diagonals; hard uses every direction.
It’s a good way to introduce Diwali vocabulary in class: after the puzzle, ask children what each word means.
What’s included
- Words: Diya, Rangoli, Lantern, Sweets, Laddoo, Marigold, Lights, Dhanteras, Lotus, Family, Gifts, Lamps, Toran, Fireworks, Bhai Dooj.
Tips
- Ask children to draw two of the words after they find them.
- Add regional words such as “Deepavali” or “kandil”.
- For Hindi words, edit the list: the grid works with Devanagari too.
About the festival
Diwali, or Deepavali, the festival of lights, is one of India’s biggest festivals. It is celebrated over five days: Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi, the main day of Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Homes are lit with diyas and decorated with rangoli. In 2027 the main day falls on 29 October.
